TMJ stands for the "Temporo-Mandibular Joint". This joint is found in every human and it is for the most part referred to as the "jaw joint". There are actually 2 of these joints, a left and a right. They are located immediately forward of the ear canal. People know very little of their TMJ until they have a problem with it. They then refer to the problem as "having TMJ". It should more appropriately be referred to as TMD, for "Temporo-Mandibular Disorder". Nevertheless, when people say "they have TMJ", what they mean is that "they have TMD". For further understanding of the inner workings of the jaw joints, click here.
